內容簡介

身為現屆立法會主席的曾鈺成在文集序言中說：「本應按香港的慣例，立法會主席在議會表決時不投票（雖然他依法享有投票權），也不公開發表政治評論或參與有關任何社會議題的辯論。這是為了要保持中立形象，讓人們相信，主席在主持會議和處理議會事務時，不會因自己的政治立場失去公正性。」於是他在2008年當選主席後開始停止撰寫報章專欄。

而他有感於香港未來關於行政長官普選，即關於政改，專欄報章是一個能夠好好收集讀者意見，並且與群眾溝通的途徑，遂於成功連任後，在2013年應報章邀請，重新執筆撰寫專欄。而這本散文結集，即他從過去幾年所寫的二百多篇文章中，精心揀選九十篇而成。如他所言：「這些文章都是在社會充滿矛盾、個人角色亦在矛盾中不斷演變之中寫成，故把書名定為《矛盾集》。」

本文集按文章主題分成「鑑古」、「立身」、「處世」、「審時」和「通識」五個部分，其中涉及中、西學養、文化歷史故事、香港時事議題，尤其適合學子與關心社會時事的人閱讀。
